Architectural Management: International Research and Practice

Architectural Management represents the state of the art of research and practice in the field and includes contributions from leading international figures. The book looks back at over a decade of research into architectural management, considers the present challenges and opportunities, and looks to the future. You’ll find a review of earlier work and developments as well as a focus on new research areas. The book is divided into six sections representing topical themes, each section contains two research-based chapters and one practical case study. Case studies are from six European countries – Belgium, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Norway, and the UK.

The Art of Architectural Modelling in Paper

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Mathematics of Space: Architectural Design

A new title in the Architectural Design series that explores the potential of computational mathematics in cutting-edge design

Mathematics has always been a vital tool in the architect’s trade, but the last fifteen years have seen a sharp rise in the power of computers and has led to computational abilities far beyond anything previously available. Modern design software and computing power have changed the traditional role of geometry in architecture and opened up new possibilities enabled by topology, non-Euclidean geometry, and other areas of mathematics.

With insight from a top-notch list of contributors, including such notables as Philippe Morel and Fabien Scheurer, Mathematics in Space discusses how the advent of computation and information technology has affected the work of contemporary architects. This new title in the Architectural Design series updates architectural mathematics since the digital revolutionWith world-class contributors, this is an essential resource for anyone interested in the ways computation has transformed the disciplineThe book explores fascinating issues in modern design, most importantly the impact of mathematics on contemporary design creativity

For students and practitioners alike, Mathematics in Space covers vital topics in a constantly changing discipline.

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture (Architectural Design)

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture addresses the translation of techniques in design methodology to their architectural realisation, at the scale of space, material programme and construction. It challenges technique-driven experimental architects at the next intellectually rigorous level – that of exploring concepts and translating them into their material counterparts. How do you think through the building of avant-garde forms? The title includes the work of high-profile philosophers, architects and engineers, such as Manuel Delanda who wrote 1000 Years of Non-Linear History; Greg Lynn and Foreign Office Architects; and Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup, who worked with Daniel Libeskind on his proposal for the Spiral Building for the V&A Museum in London, as well as with Philip Johnson and Studio Baad on the Chavasse Park Project featured here.
Intellectually stimulating and visually engaging, with its inclusion of spectacular writing, designs, manufactured prototypes and full-scale buildings, Contemporary Techniques in Architecture takes architectural publishing’s treatment of the digital to a new level, looking at its potential in a realised form as well as a creative medium.

Hypersurface Architecture (Architectural Design)

Essays and works by the leaders in the field of computer-generated architectural design.

This book explores the advances in architecture made possible by digital technology. The integration of cyberspace and the built environment is producing an entirely new method of designing. The works of key architects, including Bernard Tschumi, Philip Johnson, and Togo Ito, are featured to illustrate this new method. Includes essays by Peter Eisenman, Andrew Benjamin, Peter Lunenfield, and Marcus Novah.

Stephen Perrella (New York, NY) lectures at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. He is also the editor of the architectural newsletter Newsline, and the president of Hypersurface Systems, Inc., a World Wide Web design company.

Hypersurface Architecture II (Architectural Design)

The first edition of Hypersurface presented an analysis of contemporary culture that identified two interpenetrating trends: avant garde architecture and everyday commercial practices. Hypersurface II demonstrates the convergence of these two forces that radicalizes form and deterritorializes subjectivity. This second edition further investigates the way in which effects emerge within architecture and explores the manifestations of this unprecedented moment in architecture where the rampages of commercial culture begin to cross-contaminate architectural form.
